If you're a Nurse and are determined to work in the United Kingdom, there’s a bureaucratic process you will have to go through, naturally. But don’t be scared: it's quite simple, especially because we're here to help!
Nurses who decide to work and live in the UK must be registered in the NMC - Nursing and Midwifery Council - which is the regulator for nursing and midwifery professions in the UK.
We decided to develop this article in order to provide you with the necessary information to register in the NMC. Those are the things you'll have to do, step by step:
Step 1
- Go to the NMC website and fill out this form online.
- In the NMC Register form, you’ll be able to complete everything except the "Declaration of Good Health", which is the responsibility of a doctor and involves adding the vignette of the Medical Order.
- In the professional experience section, you should only place the service(s) where you worked or did your internship (if that is the case).
Step 2
Gather the necessary documents for registration:
Original documents:
- Criminal record - to apply at the civil registry (this document must have at least 3 months of validity).
- Nurses' Order Statement (replaces the "good character" statement on the form).
Authenticated photocopies:
- Passport (if you don’t have it, you can send the certified copy of the CC + original international birth certificate).
- Certificate of qualifications.
- IELTS Diploma.
All these documents must be translated, and the authentication certified by a competent entity. Such services are usually provided by the recruitment companies. [Have a look at our Translation & Certification Service]
Step 3
Once you have registered, you will have to pay the administrative fee, which can be done online by credit card or by creating a "virtual" card. The NMC validation process has a varying duration. It can take 2-3 weeks or almost 2 months after the required payment - depending on the volume of candidates the NMC will have to deal with. At the end of this period, you will receive the confirmation of your registration.
Step 4
Once you receive your registration confirmation and in order to complete it, you will have to verify if all the information is correct and pay the annual fee of 120 £ (about 138 €). It is very important that you save the provisional registration number (PRN - the document that you will find on the first letter sent by the NMC) because you will need this number anytime you want to communicate with the NMC about your process.
