Working in the Netherlands as a Healthcare Assistant: Melissa’s Story

When necessity turns into a decision:

Some decisions are born from courage, but also from necessity.

When life gets tough, when being strong stops being a choice and becomes the only option, that’s when many stories of change begin.

At Vitae Professionals, we work daily with healthcare professionals who find themselves at exactly this point. People who enjoy what they do, but feel that, in their current situation, they cannot build the future they want.

This is how Melissa’s story began, a healthcare assistant in the Netherlands.

The decision to change, in her own words:

On January 22nd, 2024, I set foot in this country for the first time, a place I now call home.

This step was not taken lightly. It started in June 2023, with no intention of emigrating, just ‘exploring the market’. The truth is that life in Portugal is not easy, and supporting two children on my own was an almost impossible challenge.

With the support of Vitae, this idea gradually grew into a firm decision (thank you Inês and Daniela 🤍).

Today, almost two years later:

  1. I have a financial stability I never thought possible and earn almost four times what I earned in Portugal

  2. I work fewer hours and have more quality time with my children

  3. I have a good home, a good car, and frequent travel has become a reality

  4. In just a year and a half, through my employer, I had the opportunity to study, progress in my career, and earn more because of it. Here in the Netherlands, it’s possible to keep learning, move up levels, and specialise within the workplace itself. We learn through practical experience, with weekly theoretical support, and the costs are covered by the employer while we continue to receive our salary.

People often ask me if I plan to return, and the truth is I don’t. I don’t see myself giving up the stability I’ve built here to go back to the daily struggle I lived in Portugal for 33 years 🤷🏻‍♀️

Here, I finally feel at home 🤍

More than just a change of country:

Stories like Melissa’s highlight something important: emigrating is not just about changing countries. It’s about changing opportunities and the direction of life.

In the case of the Netherlands, there is one key factor that makes a real difference: the possibility of structured career progression. Unlike many systems where the role of a healthcare assistant remains limited, in the Netherlands there is a clear pathway for development, training, and professional growth over time.

An opportunity for those who want more

If you relate to this reality and if you feel like you’re working hard but without progression or stability, there are currently opportunities for healthcare assistants in the Netherlands.

These projects offer:

  • The possibility to work and study at the same time

  • Career progression with employer support

  • A structured professional pathway

  • Improved long-term living conditions

More than just a job, this is an opportunity for growth, and having the right support makes all the difference. At Vitae Professionals, we:

The first step may be simpler than you think

Every story is different, but they all have something in common: they start with a first step.

Just like Melissa, that step can begin with simple curiosity of exploring the market, understanding what’s out there, and considering your options. And who knows where it might take you.
